Higher education system in Scotland

The United Kingdom is globally renowned for its exceptional education system, consisting of four distinct countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Each of these nations possess a unique cultural heritage. Scotland, in particular, offers many compelling reasons for international students to choose it as their study destination.

Studying a degree in Scotland gives you the chance to try a range of subjects before choosing your specialism. The standard length of a Scottish university undergraduate degree is four years, giving you a broader and more flexible education.

A Scottish university curriculum tends to involve a high level of independent study, and you can study additional subjects alongside your degree major. Employers value Scottish degrees for their breadth of knowledge, giving you the best chance of success in your chosen field.

Universities in Scotland offer three levels in higher education:

  • Undergraduate (BA or BSc)
  • Postgraduate (MA, MSc or MPhil)
  • PhD

Teaching, learning and assessment

The International Study Centre introduces you to the same style of degree-level teaching that you will experience at the University of Strathclyde. All international students will experience tutorials, seminar-style classes and large group lectures. You can study a pathway to an undergraduate degree or a postgraduate degree within one of the four faculties of the University.

Students at Scottish universities spend a lot of time studying independently. Some degrees involve practical and/or fieldwork. Assessments at Scottish universities may include:

  • Coursework
  • Project work
  • Presentation
  • Participation in seminars
  • Written assignments and essays
  • Practical assessments
  • Final dissertation

Tutor support and independent study

Universities in Scotland often offer undergraduate students the support of a personal tutor. Independent learning is an important aspect of the Scottish education system, and your personal tutor will help you to keep progressing. The University’s staff encourage independent learning by giving you the information you need to go away and gain a deeper understanding of your subject. Learning to work by yourself is an important skill to have as a graduate.

Work placements

Practical learning experiences, like internships and work experience placements, provide Strathclyde students with the skills and experience they need in today’s job market.
