Specialist degree preparation for international students

Preparation programmes at the International Study Centre have been specifically designed to support international students. Our courses help to improve your English language and study skills, ready to begin a degree programme at the University of Strathclyde.

The International Study Centre is located in the Graham Hills Building at the University of Strathclyde campus. You’ll have access to world-class facilities, and you’ll meet other students from the day you arrive. You will also receive personalised support and progress monitoring to make sure you’re fully prepared to start your degree.

Access to University facilities

You will be part of the University from the day you arrive at the International Study Centre. This means you will have access to all the campus facilities, including the library, Strathclyde Sport and Students' Union. You will also have access to additional resources available at the International Study Centre.

University-style teaching

Our specialist staff will introduce you to the style of teaching you will experience when you begin your degree. You will take part in tutorials, seminars, group discussions and larger lectures.

Personal monitoring and support

You will receive specialist support during your studies, as well as regular assessments to monitor your progress, including examinations and coursework. Tutorial sessions will give you the opportunity to get individual feedback from your tutor and discuss anything that's worrying you.

Progression to your degree

Once you have successfully completed your preparation programme and met the progression criteria, you can begin your chosen university degree.

Skills for career success

The International Study Centre offers a variety of employability-focused activities that will give you a head start in your future career. We will help you become a highly skilled, self-aware, confident and employable graduate.

You will develop key employability skills, such as teamwork, problem solving and communication. You will also be familiar with career opportunities and the world of work. Your tutors will assess your strengths and suggest areas for improvement, creating a personal development plan to help you set goals for your future success.

Your wellbeing matters

We’re committed to supporting your positive wellbeing and mental health both prior to your enrolment and whilst you are studying with us. For that reason, we offer a free Student Assistance Programme (SAP) to help you deal with any personal or student related problems that might be affecting your studies or day-to-day life.

Provided by Health Assured and Endsleigh Insurance, the Student Assistance Programme is designed to help you manage and enhance your mental health and overall wellbeing through two main features including:

Wellbeing connected

A unique counsellor-led service available 24 hours a day. 7 days a week, ready to respond to any need for emotional or practical support from international students.

Health hub

The health hub includes a range of ways to help you keep track of different aspects of your health and fitness such as water intake and sleep. There’s also a range of healthy, easy-to-make recipes to give inspiration as well as access to loads of articles, podcasts and videos.

You will receive more information about how to access this service, once you have confirmed your place. 

95% of students who completed their pathway programme at the International Study Centre were offered progression to a degree course at the University of Strathclyde in 2023.
